11 weeks, 2 days!
It’s hard to believe, but we are nearing the end of the first trimester! Yay :). The 2nd trimester brings many good things with it — morning sickness subsides (hopefully), more energy, and, MOST importantly, a big drop (like less than 2%) in the chance of miscarriage. Happy dance!
We still have an important milestone — our first trimester scan and screen – before we can fully celebrate. The first trimester ultrasound is more in-depth than others we’ve had to this point. The ultrasound will be combined with a screening and blood work to identify the risk for specific chromosomal abnormalities. The ultrasound technician will check for a nasal bone and will measure the fluid beneath the skin in the baby’s neck (this is called nuchal translucency, and the less fluid, the better) and combine that information with blood test results to determine our risk factors for chromosomal abnormalities and heart issues. Screening tests don’t say for sure if something is wrong, but will help us determine if we should have further, more invasive, testing in the second trimester. Since the screening test isn’t diagnostic, an abnormal result just means more testing is recommended; it doesn’t necessarily mean anything is wrong. Oh, and of course, we may have to wait for 7-10 days to get the results — thank you universe for teaching me patience!
I am feeling more and more pregnant, so am feeling more and more positive that Baby W is growing perfectly in my belly! I am more nauseous than I expected at this point, but I am sure it will trail off in the next few weeks. Spicy foods, which I usually love, still make me feel sick, and I have awful heartburn — thankfully, I can take Tums! I can’t stomach fish most of the time, and actually crave red meat. I guess Baby W will be a meat-eater like his/her daddy. I am also still very tired, and am so thankful that I can nap most days. I can also feel my uterus growing — it’s so weird to feel it stretching — it’s kind of like muscle pain, but a little different. My tummy is also growing :), which is so exciting!
Thank you, everyone, for the positive thoughts, prayers, emails, notes, phone calls, and text messages — they mean so much to me! Much love 🙂
